Sardine experiment

A few weeks ago, I tried out tinned sardines on an open-faced sandwich for lunch. Success! I've read several articles encouraging the consumption of sardines and other small fish because they provide essential fatty acids while containing less mercury and being more ecologically sustainable than other fish species. I can totally imagine eating a sardine sandwich once or twice a week. Mine was on sunflower-flax bread from the farmer's market with dill-lemon-caper mayo.

Sadly, I cannot report such success on the tinned smoked oyster front. I tried, but the gummy texture and sweet, smokey smell made me gag. Sadness! I will not be going there again.

I still have a tin of kippers in the pantry, but as they are smoked as well, I am a little leery...

Governors Island (no apostrophe, please) opened the 2009 summer season today with a polo match featuring international hotties Prince Harry and Ignacio "Nacho" Figueras and benefiting Sentebale, the charity co-founded by Prince Harry and Lesotho's Prince Seeiso to protect HIV/AIDS orphans and impoverished children in the tiny African nation.

And it's all well and good to get everyone out of the concrete jungle for a picnic but I say BRING ON THE MAN CANDY!

The return of the wowtfit

I know you've been waiting with bated breath for another
wowtfit. This one sort of puts that September ensemble to shame.

Here's what you can't tell from the picture.

1) The two women, are sisters, possibly twins: same face, same figure, the one on the right a little taller. The woman on the left is actually quite fashionably dressed; I'll even excuse the earthy flat slides on account of her being quite tall. Righty, on the other hand, I'm cutting no slack at all. That outfit is criminal.
2) The top of the wowtfit is cropped. It barely covered her bosom. Her "pants", however, almost covered her bosom.
3) The charming "knicker" effect is produced by safety pins at the back of the knees.
4) Hiking boots.

I can only hope (and this might actually be the case) that these two will show up on a "Twinkies" episode of What Not to Wear. Ohgodplease.

To that end, I packed up five boxes of books today and we hauled them to the basement. I made myself an inventory sheet, and joined Library Thing, and now I'm starting an overdue sort of art supplies.

Salad soup and crispy crackers

Since my bodily functions seem to have returned to normal, I am celebrating by cooking two recipes I've had in mind for several weeks.

The soup is gumbo z'herbes, with a few changes. My "herbes" ended up being mustard and collard greens, green cabbage, spinach, watercress, parsley, tarragon, and green onions, long-simmered in garlic, onions, celery, thyme, and chicken and beef broth, on top of a quick roux. And I didn't have a ham hock handy, so I subbed in a smoked turkey leg and wing. Um... yum. I will definitely make this again, but won't need to for a while, as it made approximately 5 quarts.

I didn't put the gumbo over rice because I had those gorgeous crackers you see, still warm from the oven. I used Mark Bittmann's recipe, except for the food processor I subbed in a dough blender (which we called a pastry cutter when I was growing up, but that now seems to refer to a different gadget entirely, which I would call a pastry wheel, but whatever) and a heaping cup of elbow grease (trans-fat free!). Easy, worth it, and will absolutely make them again, perhaps in cheddar, with a hint of thyme.

Wow. It's like I lost the entire last week to illness. Hadn't realized how incredibly isolated I'd been feeling until I got into the work/study gig today and almost cried with happiness over a packing-and-shipping assignment. Then I got to go pick up the laundry. Joy!

The feeling of this necklace, with its ball chain and lozenge charms, reminds me intensely of a St. Christopher medal I appropriated from my high school sweetheart. Through some miracle of self-restraint, I didn't throw it in his face after he broke up with me on Valentine's Day my freshman year of college, but I don't wear it anymore because I'm married to a different guy now and I don't wear jewelry from guys I had a thing with way back when. Duh.

So, at the end of the movie, there was someone crying in the theater and it wasn't me. I had to offer a tissue to the man sitting next to me, and I was happy to do it. He said, "That was my life up there."

I would like to fervently wish that it would not have to be anyone else's life again ever.

There is a lot not to cry about, though, and of the many tales Milk tells, perhaps the story of a late bloomer touched me the deepest. At least, it's what I came away with most strongly. Harvey Milk was 43 with no prior political experience when he started campaigning, and within five years he had been elected to city-wide office.

This gives me a tremendous amount of hope, which was Harvey's wish, for everyone, all along.

A year of friends

My, this year was filled with friends, and today was no exception. In spite of the weather, Mr. and Mrs. Boot and I zipped all over town in search of art and food and did well on both counts. We said our farewells in the late afternoon and after a too-brief nap, M. Panique and I headed out into the bitter, bitter cold to meet Eileen and Justin for dinner and a show. We said another farewell, to Dirty on Purpose, who are giving up their rock star lifestyles for, well, I suppose for something else. We scurried from Mercury Lounge to The Magician and rang in the New Year in blessed quiet (Justin has a head cold and I'm coming down with something).

I squeezed in my walk around Town Lake while Sommer ran 10 miles. Better her than me. We had Kim Phung's fantastic hot and sour soup for lunch, I think for the first time since we moved to NYC.

Later in the afternoon, Sommer had to go to work so I left the boys playing golf from the sofa and went out to practice my driving and poke around the post-holiday sales. I finally made it to The Domain, which sprang up since we left, but didn't buy anything.

I did last-minute shopping and went to yoga. We had an oyster feast, then chicken pot pies, then I sipped a shot of Godiva liqueur with two ice cubes. I re-sized a tutu and wrapped a puppy (plush). One last gift to take to the post office this afternoon, and I passed a crazy old lady dragging a wheeled cart of poorly wrapped packages. Since she didn't seem the slightest bit infirm, I just hurried past. Not fast enough to be out of earshot when she berated someone for being a stupid idiot after he failed to yield to her cart.

I was deeply entrenched in the line for the APC by the time she barged in and inserted herself in the queue for the front counter. She yelled at someone she thought was jumping the line, then when he failed to respond to her, she loudly accused him of treating her like a potted plant.

All the while taking swigs from a sports bottle of something that I'm guessing was not water.

Because I asked, my MIL graciously provided a tip for what M. Panique and I could buy for my FIL for Christmas. She gave specific, but not restrictive, suggestions as to its style, size, and composition.

Sadly, it does not exist. I have exhausted my resources, virtual and brick-and-mortar. M. Panique will be enlisted in the search tomorrow, and something will be purchased, but I am more than a bit flummoxed. You would be, too, if I told you what I'm looking for.
